14th May - AC United
This was an incredibly tough physical game and we are so proud of our girls in relation to the way they fought back and hung in there. AC United put two goals on us. Caught out of position and our transition from attack to defense saw the first goal as a great shot that simply couldn't be saved. The second goal resulting from a questionable free kick was also a great shot. Despite AC United's employment of overly aggressive tactics and use of foul play our girls kept playing soccer in the spirit of the game. We did not get sucked in to resorting to the same tactics. We did however muscle up in the second half enough to make AC work harder. I would like to make special mention to Alana in winning the ball with one of the hardest FAIREST tackles using her body strength to her advantage. The girls overcame the odds and intimidatory behaviour to put the ball in the back of the net late in the game to get one back and show AC United we will not go down without a fight. In those final moments of the game we proved that we can beat them. During the game we proved we are a more skilful team who play as a team that adheres to the rules and the spirit of the game. Stats for this week.. 60% possession (down by 4%) 459 touches on the ball (only down by 1 touch).. 184 passes (down by 45) and 14 string passes (down by 9) 7 shots resulting in 1 goal. The stats tell me we are still playing consistently well but were clearly intimidated and therefore panicked when on the ball. Super proud girls. You were all AWESOME !! Congratulations Abigail. Abigail is a great team player who shows strength and ability beyond her age. Abigail possesses a great attitude leading by example in all facets of the game. She exemplifies all that's best in a team player. She is selfless, aggressive and reliable. She reads the play so well and constantly positions herself perfectly. Abigail’s work off the ball is second to none. Her timing is brilliant as she fearlessly attacks the ball when necessary. I have never seen Abigail give anything less than 100% and this game was no exception. Another consistent, strong performance. Well done Abigail!!!
